Blog: Calorex Dehumidifers in Action at Colchester Zoo

Calorex DH 60
21 Apr 2022

Colchester Zoo’s popular Koi Carp building was suffering from damage caused by high relative humidity levels. The quick installation of a Calorex Dehumidifier has led to this well-loved attraction being safe from moisture damage and ready for visitors.

Humidity Problems

Colchester Zoo is ranked as the second favourite zoo in the UK. It is home to an exciting collection of Koi Carp and Japanese Bitterlings, all housed in the beautiful Japanese inspired exhibit called Koi Niwa.

The Koi Niwa exhibition features two large pools, where visitors can watch these stunning species. As part of the mechanics of the building, the large pools operate with two filtration systems. The temperature of the exhibit has caused large amounts of water from the ponds to evaporate into the air.

This continued evaporation raises the relative humidity level within the exhibit, and this began to cause problems with condensation, damp and mould.

The water intensive exhibition, left untreated, could suffer more severe structural problems due to damp in the framework of the building.

Humidity Solutions from Calorex

Deputy Estate Manager of Colchester Zoo, John Game, quickly sought an effective drying solution for the indoor wildlife display.

In his own words John Game explained; “We were having problems with condensation within the Koi Niwa building, which had led to the discolouration of the internal bamboo cladding. Following technical guidance from Calorex, a wall-mounted Calorex DH60AX dehumidifier unit was fitted to remove moisture from the atmosphere.”

“The unit was good value for money and we were very happy with the service provided by Calorex.”

Having such a large amount of water indoors led to high relative humidity within the fish wildlife environment. The damage caused by the high levels of humidity could have made the exhibit unsuitable for visitors.

If this was left to carry on, the Zoo could have incurred massive costs in mending the structural damage rendered by the excess moisture in the air.

Calorex Dehumidifiers across Colchester Zoo

The successful installation of a Calorex Wall mounted Dehumidifier (Model: DH60AX), in the Koi Niwa exhibition, was not the only area of the Zoo to have benefited from a Calorex dehumidifier.

The Australian Rainbows exhibit at Colchester Zoo houses a stunning group of Rainbow Lorikeets. The environment they need requires vast amounts of heating and moisture, which was causing mildew problems in the staff room next door.

The installation of a Calorex DH15AX wall-mounted dehumidifier, quickly solved this problem, creating a more suitable environment for the Lorikeets, visitors and staff alike.
