Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners For Commercial and Domestic Use
A packaged terminal air conditioner (PTAC) is one of the most practical and cost effective solutions for controlling the climate in an individual room or zone. These units are widely used across hotels, care homes, student accommodation, offices and even residential properties that require year-round climate solutions. PTAC units provide both air conditioning and reliable heating in a single, self-contained system.
A PTAC unit is self-contained and is installed through an external wall. Each unit is able to independently heat and cool a specific space, making it ideal for buildings where individual temperature control is advantageous. Unlike other systems, PTAC units do not rely on ductwork. This makes them easy to install, maintain and replace.
PTAC units work by drawing in indoor air and cooling it through an evaporator coil using refrigerant, and then blowing the cooled air back into the room while expelling heat outside via a condenser coil. When a PTAC is used for heating, they use either electric resistance heaters or heat pump technology, which reverse the cooling cycle to bring heat indoors.
Many units also have a vent to allow a small amount of fresh outdoor air into the space. PTACs are typically installed through an exterior wall and function independently of central HVAC systems.
Reliable and Trustworthy PTAC Units
At National Heater Shops, we offer a wide range of PTAC units from a variety of reliable and trustworthy brands such as Air Conditioning Centre and Powrmatic.
PTAC units are especially popular in commercial and domestic environments due to their easy setup and space-saving installation. When buying one of these units, there are a few key features to consider:
Cooling and heating capacity (BTU/kW)
Energy efficiency ratings
Noise levels
Controls and connectivity
Ventilation
Application and usage

Packaged Terminal Air Conditioning FAQs
Are packaged terminal air conditioners energy efficient?
Yes, because each packaged terminal air conditioner operates independently, meaning that energy is only used where it’s needed - making them both highly efficient and energy conscious.
Are PTAC units suitable for home use?
PTAC units can be used in homes, they are designed for single-room use so are particularly useful in homes that would benefit from climate control in individual rooms
Can a packaged terminal air conditioner provide heat?
Yes, most PTAC units include both heating and cooling functions, which often use either electric heat or heat pump technology to warm the air.
Where are PTAC units usually used?
PTAC units are most commonly found in commercial areas such as hotels, hospitals, care homes, apartment buildings and retail spaces. Their space-saving installation allows for them to blend into the space better and can prevent them from being tampered with.
