Rugged waste oil burners for heating industrial areas

You can install industrial waste heaters, also referred to as waste oil burners and multi-oil heaters, in workshops, garages, warehouses, factories and other industrial areas that produce waste oil. They can burn a wide range of oil-based fuels including heavier viscosity oils that aren't compatible with conventional heaters. You can use and recycle the waste oil to keep the space warm and comfortable throughout the cold winter months. You can fuel waste oil burners using engine oil, gearbox oil, vegetable oil, diesel oil, 35-sec heating oil, other types of used oil, and bio-fuels such as rapeseed oil.

Waste oil burners are an excellent option for heating large spaces using waste oil. It allows you to warm the room without enduring the cost of fuels, which can be important considering the changes to how you can use red diesel and rebated fuels. But, burning waste oil doesn't result in free heat. Regulation changes made in 2016 mean it is now illegal to burn waste oil in a small waste oil burner (SWOB) unless a permit is obtained under Schedule 13A of the Environmental Permitting Regulations 2010, which costs for the application and an annual fee.

The change followed an amendment to bring SWOBs within broader waste incineration legislation designed to reduce the emission of air pollutants. You can continue to use your multi-fuel burner without a permit if you use non-waste fuel.

How does a waste oil burner work?

A motor turns a fan, which pulls air into a blast tube. A pump then draws the oil from the tank to the burner through a filter. The oil is preheated to the correct temperature and is atomised, becoming small particles. The fine mist of heated oil is then sprayed into the blast tune, where it mixes with the air. Next, the oil and air in the blast tube are ignited by a high voltage starter, which heats the cool air passing through the heat exchanger. The heated air is then expelled into the room, while fumes and excess gas are exhausted out through a chimney.
